Detroit Tigers Snag Isan Díaz Off Waivers From San Francisco Giants, DFA Zach Logue

The Detroit Tigers have claimed infielder Isan Díaz off waivers from the San Francisco Giants, the team's PR department announced Monday evening.

Díaz has been optioned to Triple-A Toldeo, but Detroit still had to designate left-handed pitcher Zach Logue for assignment in order to make room for him on the 40-man roster.

The Giants had recently optioned Díaz to Triple-A Sacramento on Aug. 4.

Díaz appeared in just six major league games for San Francisco this season, going 1-for-19 at the plate with a single, an RBI and two walks. In 27 minor league games, Díaz was hitting .248 with seven home runs, 20 RBI an .828 OPS.

Back when he was the Milwaukee Brewers' No. 5 prospect, Díaz was part of the trade package the team used to bring in MVP outfielder Christian Yelich. Díaz played 145 games with the Miami Marlins from 2019 to 2021, hitting .275 with nine home runs, 42 RBI and a .562 OPS.

The Marlins dealt Díaz to the Giants in 2022, but he didn't make San Francisco's major league roster that year either. Instead, Díaz hit .275 with 23 home runs, 61 RBI and a .950 OPS with Triple-A Sacramento.

It remains to be seen if the Tigers will make room for Díaz on their 26-man roster somewhere down the line, but September call-ups are less than four weeks away. The 49-62 Tigers are far out of the playoff picture, using Andy Ibáñez, Zack Short and Nick Maton as their second basemen at the moment.

Logue didn't get too many chances to shine in Detroit, appearing in just three games for the club in 2023. The southpaw made just three appearances in the majors this summer, all in July.

After tossing 3.1 scoreless frames against the Colorado Rockies on July 1, Logue allowed nine earned runs and three home runs over his next two outings. He currently owns a 7.36 ERA and 1.364 WHIP on the season.

In 2022, Logue was a part-time starter for the Oakland Athletics. He went 3-8 with a 6.79 ERA and 1.544 WHIP across 57.0 innings of work.

The former ninth round pick out of Kentucky will now either get traded or placed on waivers over the next 10 days. If he goes unclaimed, the 27-year-old Logue would then get sent down to the minors.
