Oakland Athletics' Zack Gelof Makes Team History with Another Big Day at the Plate
USA TODAY Sports

Yes, the Oakland Athletics are the worst team in baseball, but there are still reasons to watch, namely the development of young prospects.

One of those prospects is rookie infielder Zack Gelof, who continues to produce despite barely have been in the big leagues for a month.

Gelof went 4-for-5 with two doubles in an 8-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. Hitting in the second spot in the order, he's now hitting .294 with eight home runs, 16 RBI and seven stolen bases. He's carrying an .984 OPS through his first 109 at-bats.

With his performances at the plate, he's also made team history.

Per MLB on social media:

After another great night at the dish, Zack Gelof becomes the first player in @Athletics history to have 20 extra-base hits and 20 runs scored through his first 28 career games played.

The 23-year-old is currently ranked the No. 3 prospect in the organization by MLB.com.

The following comes from a portion of his MLB.com prospect profile:

When he’s locked in, Gelof provides an exciting combination of approach and raw power from the right side of the plate to any lineup. His swing is a bit unorthodox, but he understands it well and he shows good knowledge of the strike zone.

We're certainly seeing that right now and the A's will hope it continues as they play out the string on this season.

The A's are currently 34-87 on the season and will start a series on Friday with the Baltimore Orioles.
