Robert Spillane On Same Page With Antonio Pierce, Embracing Leadership Role
Candice Ward-USA TODAY Sports

If there’s one thing that Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce values as much as anything, it’s leadership. Thankfully, his defense has plenty of it—we know about Maxx Crosby, but the linebacker group’s leader isn’t far behind. You know the name: Robert Spillane.

Spillane, once an afterthought in terms of being a free agent signing last year, turned out to be a revelation. In fact, the former Pittsburgh Steeler put out career numbers across several categories: sacks (3.5), interceptions (3), and solo tackles (82). Looking ahead to his second year with the Silver and Black, Spillane is embracing an ever larger role as a true defensive leader alongside Crosby.

Speaking with Levi Edwards of the Raiders’ official website, Spillane talked about his expectations for himself—he wants to be held to a higher standard and will, conversely, do the same.

“It’s my opportunity to take young guys under my belt, even older veteran guys that sometimes need a push in the back, and give it to him. I tell those guys, don’t be afraid to coach me up. I’m not this perfect player. So, if you notice me lacking in any area, get on me. I’m not above you, as a leader you got to take and give.”

A true Raiders duo: Robert Spillane and Antonio Pierce

Spillane also went on to talk about his head coach; as we all know, Pierce has a fiery personality. He’s clearly holding his Raiders to a new standard, but at the same time, he’s in it right there with his players.

“Pierce talks from the heart. He lays out a very clear and concise vision of what he wants this offseason to look like, what he expects our team to look like. As players, we just go about getting his vision to come through to fruition.”

Some may be concerned about the lack of depth at linebacker, of course. Still, general manager Tom Telesco is likely not finished addressing the position. Don’t be surprised if at least one more player joins the linebacking corps. Especially with the NFL Draft less than a week away.

As Spillane said, he’ll have zero problem showing them the way—the Raider Way, Antonio Pierce’s Way.
